NORTH ATLANTIC TRADING COMPANY.
SENSATIONAL EVIDENCE. Received May 20 11.30 a.m. OTTAWA, May 19 Mr Preston, the Canadian Emigration Commissioner for England, gave sensational evidence before the Dominion 'House of Representatives Committee on Colonization, relating to affairs in oonneotion witb the inception of the North Atlantio Trading Company. He declared that alter Lord Stratbcona and Mr J. G. Coloner, Secretary to the Canadian High Commissioner, had held a meeting with the steamsbip agents at Hamburg, in 1898, to discuss the enlargement of the field of Continental emigration to Canada, Baron HatzSeldt, then German Ambassador in England, was instructed that unless Lord Strathcona was able to satisfactorily explain his action it was inadvisable for Lord Strathcona io return to Germany. Mr Preston understood that the explanation, made through Lord Salisbury, was that the German law would not be transgressed. Mr Preston added that the Company was formed. Continental booking agents being pledged not to violate the laws of countries wherein they operated. The names of those associated in the matter were kept confidential. Mr Fielding, Minister of finance, announced in the Dominion House of Representatives, that Lord Strathoona had written declaring that the oontract and the names were confidential.
