A SENSATIONAL SUICIDE.
. ♦— By Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND. April 30. A man named Walter Newman, aged 31 years, shot himself with a revolver in the Salvatfon Army ring in Victoria Street on Saturday night. He asked to speak to the officer in charge, ana as the latter was about to speak to him he put a revolver to his mouth and shot himself, dying shortly after. Newman was an Englishman, and had lately been working at Morrinsville. LATER. Newman, on entering the Army ring, said be (wanted to see the captain. The band was playing, and the Salvationists were singing the hymn, "He 1 Pardoned a Rebel Like Me." Newman was heard to say, "Yes, He pardoned a rascal like me." Adjutant Dixon told Newman tc wait till the hymn bad flushed, theu he would speak to him. Newman thereupon displayed a revolve' 1 , and blew bis brains out. The adjutant's hands were covered with blood, but he was uninjured. By his instructions, tb,e baud played some lively airs to allay the excitement till the police arrived, and removed the body. It was subsequently learned that Newman Was a single man, aged 31 years, a surveyor on a visit from Morrinsville. He was well oonneoted in England, hailing from Earle's Ooome, Worcestershire. Ihe oause of the tragedy is unknown. \ ■
