. THE FLAMES CHECKED. * MUCK SICKNESS EXPECTED. MANY GRAIN SHEDS DESTROYED. Received April 23, 8.30 a.m. NEW YORK, April 22. General Funstoa, the officer in command of the troops in San Francisco, reports that the Are is not progressing west of Vannera Avenue. A westerly wind has arisen, and it is likely the city south ot Vannera Avenue will bo destroyed. It will be impossible to establish sanitary conditions immediately, and much sickness is expected. Other reports state that the fire on the water front destroyed many grain sheds before it was stayed. Che check was the result of the use of oea water and tLe efforts of the sailors. The Hall of Reoords escaped damage. This means that disp cite as to titles will be avoided. LONDON, April 22. The Daily Teleeraph state? that the shares of fifteen British insurance companies depreciated six million 3in four days. Foreign companies (adds the Telegraph) are probably liable for ten millions in San Francisco and New York, The Tirres estimates the total insurance losses at fifty millions. MANY TALES OF HORROR TOLD. TWO MEN SHOT FOR INSULTING WOMEN. Received April 23, 11 p.m. NEW YORK, April 23. Steel is being universally used in the reconstruction of buildings which starts to-day. The banks resume business in tents on Wednesday. The refugees tell many tales of horror. In several instances men were pinioned down by wreckage, and the flames reaching them they pleaded piteously to be put out of their misery, askiug the soldiers and the-policemen to shoot them. Other narratives show that citizens who were preparing to flee with their families readily responded to the fireman requestß, risking their lives in extraoting tne helpless. Two men were shot in the Park for insulting women. Mr William Waldorf Aitor has subscribed twenty thousand pounds sterling to the Relief Fund. N.Z. INSURANCE COMPANY'S OFFICE DESTROYED. WELLINGTON, April 23. The New Zealand Insurance Company, has received information San Francisco that their building has been destroyed by lire. The officers have not yet been able to get to the strong room, but it is expected that the reoords will be found intact. THm MAIL SERVICE. SYMPATHETIC AUSTRALIAN REFERENCES. Received April 23, 9.41 a.m. SYDNEY, April 23. Cable messages have been received by the Mends of a number of prominent Australians who are in San Francisco stating that they are all well. Many pulpit references were made to the disaster yesterday. A cablegram has been received from Mr Spreckals stating that the Sonoma, which was to have left San Francisco last Thursday, will miss one trip, and advising agents to take passengers and oargo by the Sierra, whioh leaves Sydney on Monday next as usual. Mr Spreokles adds that railway connection from San Francisco is intaot. • MELBOURNE, April 23. ' Speakers at the Eight Hour banquet made sympathetic references to the disaster. If assistance is required the Eight Hours Committee and workers will do their share. Miss Tittel Brune has been advised that her properly in San Francisco, valued at £2.000 wai totally dostroyed. AUCKLAND, April 23. Tne Oceanio Company has been advised that the sailings of the mail steamers from San Franoisoo are temporarily suspended. FIRE EXTINGUISHED Iw THE CITY. Received April 23, 10.4 p.m. NEW YORK, April 23. The fire has been extinguished in the city ami suburbs, and only the smoking embers remain. The fire covered an area of 25 miles. PUBLIC MEETING IN WELLINGTON. WELLINGTON, April 23. A public meeting was held tonight to oonsider the question of raising funds for the relief of the sufferers by the San Franoisoo disaster. It was decided to take steps to raise money. About £l2O was collected in the room.
