MONTHLY REPORT. Tbe monthly report of the, Department of Labour for April contains the following concerning tho Wairarapa:— Te Nni.—Building trades: Brisk; all hands have been fully employed repairing dwelling bouses and erecting a new Town Wall in To Nui. Retail trade (general): Good businosH doing in all branches during the month; Unskilled labour: All local men have been fully employed at roadwork, and at scrub cutting. Several swaggers were seen on tbe road during the mouth; nearly all of them got work scrub-cutting in tbe district. Several contractors bore require good men (about thirty) for scrub cutting at Is per hour. Mastorton.—Business generally ia fairly good, an;! tho district continues to make rapid progress. The business part of the borough presents a very busy appearance owiug to the number of substantial brick buildings ia course of erection. A considerable number of residences are also being built. Huildiug trades: Carpenters and joiners have been kept iully employed during the month. Bricklayers and plasterers are busy. Painters and decorators have plenty ofi work in hand and coming forward. Plumbers have been kept fully employed. Engineering trades: Good steady business; local tradesmen fully employed; no demand at present for outside labour. Tailoring trade: A fair average has been maintained. Some overtime has been worked. Dressmaking: Fair: about the season's usual trade. Saddle and harness making: Medium. Uoa.hbuilding: Business continues fairly good; all local bands fully employed. Brickmaking: Busy. Furniture trades: A steady business has been done during the mouth; all hands working full time. Retail trades (general): Tbe weather during the month has been somewhat more* favourable for business than the preceding month, and consequently trade has- been quite up to the average. The increase in the number of retail tnders still continues. Unskilled labour: The weather having improved, numbers of men have found employment at barvest-work, etc., the supply apparently being equal to the demand. Not many applications for work wore received, and of those who applied all who were able and willing have been sent to private or Government work. Grey town North—Building trades: Clothing trade: Fairly busy. Retail trade (general): Good; up to tbe usual standard. Unskilled labour: There is sufficient of this class of labour in the district for the demand. /Very few swaggers have been seen on tbe roads lately.
