ERUPTION OF VESUVIUS.
SHOWERS OF RED HOT STONES.
Received April 12, 9.47 a.m. LONDON, April 11.
A terrible hurricane, accompanied by torrents of water and showers of red-hot stones, the size of eggs, compelled the abandonment of Torre del Greio.
Complete darkness enshrouds San Uenaro, where numerous fatalities have occurred.
The town of Sarno is buried in ashes. Most of the residents escaped.
RAIN OF ASHES CONTINUES.
CENTRAL CRATER BLOWN TO PIECES.
Received April 13, .9.47 a.m. ROME, April 12. ~ Business is at a standstill at Naples. The rain of ashea continues over a wide area, though it has ceased at Naples. Professor Mattucii saw the whole of the central orafcer blown into the air. Millions of tooa of material were scattered in all directions noticeably altering the configuration of the country. The inmates of the observatory had a terrible experience, and their lives were in constant danger.
ERUPTION SUBSIDING.
Received April 13, 10.S1 p.m. ROME, April 12
Professor Mattucli remained at his post at the Vesuviau observatory despite partial obstruction. He telegraphed that Veavius is quieter and that there are re-assuring seismic records.
The latest reports state that the eruption is subsiding. The appearance of Vesuvius has been entirely changed. The old cone has almost disappeared, leaving a flattened ridge. - ' \ = KING AND QUEEN-VISIT SUFFERERS. Received April 14, 12.5 a.m. ROME, April 13. The King and Queen visited the sufferers at the hospital, and, also, fugitives. With the sun behind the clouds the light red dust from Mount Vesuvius shines a pale blue.
