REDUCTION IN PASSENGER RATES AND FREIGHTS.
DUNEDIN, April 10. The Federal Iloulcjer. Company are advertising new passenger rates to-night, viz salonn 25gna, steerage 12gns, also a great redaction in freights. A STATEMENT. OHKISTCHUECH, April 10. When seen, this afternoon, concerning the action of the Federal Company reduoiug fares and freights between New Zealand and London, Mr Isaac Gihbs, general manager of the New Zealand Shipping Company, said: "The situation is quite clear. These people have been 'pin-prick-ing' us for some time. Now they are attacking us, it goes without saying that we shall take the necessary steps to protect our interests, and our clients may rest assured that they will receive as favourable treatment from us as from any line. The aotion of the Federal-Houlder Line necessarily entails the all-round reduction of freights and fares. Whether these will be permanent or only temporary remains to be seen. Heyond this, 1 have nothing to say." WELLINGTON April 10. Mr Owan Cox, manager in Australia for the Federal lines, declines to make any statement about the shipping tariff war. | From enquiries m&de in other directions it seems unlikely that the Company will advertise a fixed tariff of freight*, but will oommunicate with shippers individually. The result of this will probably be the creation of an open market for freights. The rates quoted by all companies are likely to be governed by the circumstances of the moment.
