REVENUE RETURNS. Received April 2, 9.49 a. m. SYDNEY, April 2. The State revenue for the quarter increased by £330,000, and for the nine months by £737,000 as compared with the corresponding periods last year. MELBOURNE, April 2. The quarter's revenue returns of Victoria show an inorease of £21,000. ADELAIDE, April 2. The South Australian revenue for the quarter increased by £32,000. MR DEAKIN'S POLICY CRITICISED. I MELBOURNE, April 2. Mr Watson, leader of the Labour Party, referring to , Mr Deakin's policy speech, says it would be improper to attempt an alteration of the tariff on the eve of a general election. He disagrees with Mr Deakin in rgard to the proposed federal land-tax, pointing out that its object was not to raise revenue. THE FIRE IN SYDNEY. ; Received April 3, 12.25 a.m. SYDNEY, April 2. Ward, master of the steamer Manly, has been aaquitted on a charge of the manslaughter of Mrs Hemming, who was killed in a collison between the steamer and her husband's launoh, on January 28th. (Hemming, the owner of the iaunoh, was, also, killed in the collision). PUBLIC DEBATE ON SOCIALISM MESSRS REID AND HOLMAN. Received April 3; 1.9 a.m. SYDNEY, April 2. Muoh interest was shown in the publio debate between Mr G. H. Reid and MrW. Holman, a member of the Legislative Assembly, on the question of socialism. There were two thousand people present. Mr Holman. who appears as the accredited representative of the La- j tour Party, opened with a speech in defence of socialism. Mr Reid replied. The debate will be finished tomorrow night.
