CHINESE LABOUR. A PARSON DEFENDS THE SYSTEM. Reoeived March 30, 8.27 a.m. .LONDON, March 29. The Rev. Mr Landor-Smith, Presbyterian Minister at Germiston, the largest centre of on the Hand, and a Liberal in nlitics, in a letter to the press, dedans thai the demand for labour in tIX mines is far beyond what the natives are able to supply. He is convinced that white labour would end in a moral, economic failure. There is no tiint of slavery about the employment of Chinese, and the cry is unjust, unworthy and untrue. The Chinese, he says, are better fed, housed, and paid than the average unskilled labourer in British factories, and the Chinese outrages ate not more prevalent than occur in English communities. Personally, he objected to the Chinese beooming permanent settlers.
