MASTERTON RACING CLUB.

AUTUMN MEETING. The Autumn Meeting of the Maaterton Raoing Club was opened, yesterday, on the Club's course, at Of aki. Iu the forenoon the weather was showery, and the hopes of holding the meeting in favourable weather seeme 1 remote. However, the rain held off during the afternoon, but a cold, bleak wind blew aorosa the course, which did not tend to make the afternoon very pleasant for the visitors. The attendance was large, and those present were rewarded with a good day's sport. Every race brought out a large Geld, and the fluisb iu almost every instance was close. After the Waipipi Cup Capulet was pnt up for auction by Mr J. R. Nicol, but wa« passed in at 85 guineas. There was an absence of any falls during the day, but one slight aucident oocurred. As the Held was drawn up at the barrier for the Masterto'i Hack Handicap, Mr F. Matthews, trainer for Mr J. Macara, approached too near Riflemaid, and the animal Kicked Mr Matthews in the abdomen, rendering him uuoonscious for a short time, and bruising him. The Masterton Ambulance Corps, who were present throughout the day, proceeded to the spot and administered the necessary treatment to the injured man. Mr Thoa. Duncau, the had all the arrangements complete foi? the meeting, and he was ably aa- • sisted by Mr W. Gillespie, and Mr JR. Tylee, as totalisator clerk. An excellent luncheon was provided by Mr E. Felling, and the Masterton String Baud, under Mr Reibana Boyes, supplied music throughout the afternoon. The sum of £6,648 was put through the totalisator, as against £6,697 for the corresponding day last year, being a decrease of £49. There was some difficulty in efieoting a start in this race owing to Black Squall refusing to face round. The field were got well away together. Hydrant made the running and at the first hurdle he had aa his nearest attendants Tilson and Pemmican. Passing the stand Hydrant still maintained, a. lead, with Oryx and Pemmican in that older. Passing out of the straight Oryx went to the front with Hydrapt close..up, and, along the back stretoh BJaok Squall joined the leaders. At the willows Hydrant moved up and led into the straight, with Pemmioan, Oryx and Black Squall olose on his heels, and in that order. The chestnut gelding cleared the last hurdle a good two lengths ahead of the field, and passed the post with three lengths to the good.
