SOME STARTLING REVELATIONS.

WELLINGTON, March 21. An extraordinary case was heard at the Polioe Court, to-day, in which some startling revelations were made of the filthy conditions existing in the heart of the city. The case was described by the Chief Municipal Inspector as the worst that ever oame under his no tioe. The defendant was one, James Phillips, wno carries, on a business in Taranaki Street. He was charged with havng suffered offensive rubbish to remain on his.premises in contravention of the city by-law. It was shown in the evidenoe that, attracted by the revolting smell from the defendant's premises, the inspector gained an entrance after some trouble, and found an extraordinary collection of festering fruit, rotting sacks, and lumber. There were dray loads of rotten bananas, fowls in orates and sacks and general rubbish. So bad was the stenoh that the people living on the other side of the street had to keep the windows of their bouses closed. Defendant had been known to stow putrifying bacon under his house. He was fined £5 With oosts.
