ALLEGED CRUELTY.

UUNEDIN, March/7. it the Police Court, to-day, Essie D. Leach was charged with having ill-treated and neglected a child. Accused, yvho is a married woman with one child, adopted the subject of the charge from the Salvation Army Home, and received a premium. The evidence ehowed that the child had lost weight and had bruises about the body and face. The neighbours heard it crying, and the child presented the appearanoe of being neglected. The woman, in her evidence, said her husband bad been cruel to her, and she had to leave horce twice. She denied nagleot or ill-treatment, and could only account for the bruises by their own child striking the other. MrHanlonj for the defence, raised the point that the husband was custodian of the child, and not the woman. There was, no evidence of wilful neglect or ill-treatment. Mr Graham, S.M., reserved his decision.
