BURGLAR ARRESTED.
FIRES AT A CONSTABLE. AUCKLAND, March 7. A sensational arrest of an alleged burglar occurred in the Newton district early this morning. A night watchman, seeing a man and woman in a locked-up shop, oallod Constable Coppell. The pair left the premises aa the officer approached. The woman escaped, but the man was chased and eventually caDtured. While the officer was running, the man. It is alleged, shot at him twice with a revolver, missing bis aim. The fugitive, wlio gave his name as William Smith, was caught, and a revolver with bail cartridges taken from him. A skeleton key was found near whore he was captured. At the Police Court this morning Smith was charged with shooting at the constable and breaking and entering
