MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.

ORDINARY MEETING. m The ordinary meeting of the Masterton Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor presided and the other members la ■were —Crs. J. H. Pauling, J. Elliott, P. VV. Temple, T. G. Hoar, W. Morris, J. 0. Ewinigon, E. McEwen and E. G. Eton. An apology for absence was received from Cr Feist. The Under-Secretary of Defence wrote informing the Council that out of the number of trophies of the late Sooth African War, which were allotted by the Imperial GoTernment to the colony, it bad been decided Jay the Cabinet to offer to the citizens of Masterton, twelve Mausers and three MartiniHenry rifles, which it was suggested should be placed in some public building for general inspection. Tbo letter went on the state that the Minister would be glad to know whether the rifles would be accepted bv tlio Council on behalf of the citizens; if, so tbe Minister wished to be .informed as to tbe propo a ed location of the rifles, and whether the Council would undertake the responsibility t of their maintenance.

The Mayor stated that he had seen Lieutenant Morton and be had Btated that the Volunteers would look after the articles on condition that the Council provided a place wherein to keep them. The matter was left in the hands of the Mayor and Lieutenant Morton. Tbe place suggested wliere the rifles should be kept was on a rack in the Library. A circular was received from Ihe Secretary for Education notifying the Counoil that the Government subsidy to the 'Masterton Publio. Library had been granted, and would be paid, on application to the Treasury. The subsidy amounted to £l6 17s 3d, being the highest sum that can. be obtained by any public library in the colony. H. Lett applied to tbe Council for a service pipe and gas meter to be supplied and fixed to bis premises in Olive Street. ..

Tbe Engineer reported that there was no gas main in the street, the nearest one.being in Lincoln Road, about four chai&s away. Tbe matter wag held over pending a report from tbe Engineer.

,Tbe reports of ,the , ;W,brks?Library, and Fire Brigade Committees were read and adopted. Tbe notice of motion given by Or Pauling, "that no new Carriage licenses be issued in tbe borough, seeing that the town is already foil supplied with licensed conveyances," was-withdrawn, and the meeting adjourned.
