(From Our o<vn Correspondent). MAURICEVILLE, February 16. A farewell social was tendered to Mr and Mrs C. H. Smith and their son-in-law and daughter, Mr and Mrs. Obisholm, on Wednesday night. Mr 0. Brooks, in an appropriate speech, presented Mr and Mrs Smith with a handsome sot of table carvers, and to Mrs Cbisr"olm a beautiful panel in New Zealand wood, carved by Mr Hartup. The recipients feelingly replied. Refreshmen fca were provided by the ladies, after which a very enjoyable dance was held. It was near two o'clock in the morning when the gathering—one of the most pleasanifoxperienoed in Muunoeville broKe up. At about a quarter to nine o'clock yesterday motning, a sharp shook of earthquake, lasting a half a minute, was experienced. The direction was tiorth-west to south east. A social will be held, on Friday next, in aid of Mrs P. Jorgensen, who was recently injured by a rail way accident. The programme has not yet been drawn up, but. the prices have been fixed at 2s 6d and Is for gentleman and ladies, respectively. The scholars attending the State School will be examined on April 6th, and both teachers aud pupils are working assiduously to attain the best results. Recently a largo number of new books'were purobased fortbe school children's library at the sohool, and the additions are very popular. A large uumb.er of residents have expressed their intention of subscribing to the institution.
