MASTERTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
WORKS COMMITTEE. A meeting-of the Masterton Borough Council as a Works Committee was held last evening. The Mayor, presided, and the other members present were—Crs McEwen, Feist, Ewintgon, Eton, Morris, Hoar, Temple, Elliot, and Pauling. As instructed by the Council, the Engineer submitted a report regarding the extension of the water supply to Lansdowne. He was of opinion that there was ample water at the present intakes to supply Lansdowne for domestic purposes. Means would have to be provided so as to measure the amount of water supplied to that locailty, and that could best be done by providing a meter at the end of the borough main, where the junction takes place. Even if not for a basis of payment, it would be satisfactory to, al 1 parties to know definitely from time to time the amount of water supplied. Cr Feist mbved, and Cr Hoar seconded, "Tbat, in consideration of the report furnished by the Engineer, the water be supplied to Lansdowne on terms to be arranged, by the Counoil." This was carried by seven votes to three. The conditions imposed were that the concrete tank be ereoted on the top of the Lansdowne hill, as suggested by the residents; also that the maintenance of the reticulation, etc., be borne by the residents. The charge was fixed at three farthings in the pound on the capital value, and the minimum oharge to bo for 20,000 gallons per day. The oost of the meter is also to be borne by the residents of Lansdowne. The, Engineer also reported on the question of street lighting. The Committee decided to provide five new lamps for Pine Street. The remainder of the report was ordered to be circulated to each Councilor for consideration at the next meeting. The Engineer then brought up the question of his receiving extra payment in consideration for his extra work in connection with the spending of the £5,500 loan for the extension of the drainage system. He stated that if he had been given to understand at the time that he was not going to receive any extra payment he would have declined to do the work, and severed bis connection with the Council there and! then. The matter was discussed at length, and Cr Eton proposed, and Cr Elliott seconded, that the Engineer be paid a bonus of 10 per oeut iOU tte amount (£421) that he saved in carrying out the work. This was lost by four votes to six. The Committee decided to visit the bridge over the Makora stream, in Colombo Road, on Thursday, at 2.30 p.m. On the question of the state of the footpaths, in Pine Street, being brought up by Cr Temple, the Mayor stated that he would visit the locality concerned, to-day, and report at the meeting'of the Counoil, to-night. Accounts amounting to £343 7s were passed for payment.
