COUNTY TELEPHONE LINES.
CONDITIONS FRAMED BY THE MASTERTON COUNTY COUNCIL.
So many applications have beep received by the Masterton County Council of late for permission to erect telephone wires along the County roads that the Council has decided to issue regulations governing the erection of telephone posts and wires, and the following conditions drawn up by a sub-com-mittee were adopted at yesterday's meeting of the Council:—Any person desirjiis of erecting a telephone line on any road must make application to, and receive permission from the Council in writing to do so, before proceeding with the works. The posts shall be proportioned in dimensions, and spaced apart as follows:—Five chains apart. For one wire the post shall not; be less than Sin x sin at bottom and 4in x lin at top. For three wires they shall be not less than Gin x Gin at bottom, tapering to not less than sin x sin at top. For every additional wire up to six wires they shall be not less than Bin x Bin at bottom, and 6in x Gin at top. The posts shall be set at such distance from the boundary of the road as may be direoted by the Engineer for the time being to the Council, and they shall be of sufficient length to carry the sag of the lowest wire at a height of not less than 16 feet from the ground at all road crossings, and entrances to properties, and not less than 12 feet from the ground at all other places. Should any property owner require to make an entrance to his land from the road, the promoters of the line shall at their own expense raise the wires so as to comply with die provisions of the preceding regulation. The promoters of any line shall not have the exclusive use thereof, but sucn lines shall be available for connecting fresh subscribers with .the central exchange in Masterton or other centre, whenever required for the purpose, upon payment by such fresh subscribers of a fair proportion of the then value of the line, and all expenses in connection with the extension of the service, or on such other terms as may be materially agreed upon between the promoters and the fresh subscribers, or failing such agreement being arrived at, as may be deoided by the Council. These conditions to take effect over lines already constructed or in progress. All lines must be properly maintained on public roads by subscribers, and if the subscribers fail to maintain the lines, the Counoil will consider them abandoned and may cause their removai.
