TEST WON BY DENNISTON.

MASTERTON SECOND,

NELSON, February 2. The Band Contest test selection resulted:— Denuistoo 1 Mastertou 2 Feildirjg 3 Grey Battalion ... ... 4 (The test selection chosen for the competition was Donizetti's' "Poliufco," as arranged by the late E. Swift, a well-known arranger of band music, and who at one time was conductor of the famous Dyke Temperance Baud, of Yorkshire. The other entries in the competition, were:—Hokitika Citizeus, Hokitika Volunteer, Greymouth Catholic, Nelson Citizens, Nelson Garrison, Teinuka Municipal and Granity. The Quick-step competition will tike place this afternoon). JUDGE'S OPINION. (Special to Age). NELSON, February-2. Judge Herd, in his remarks, said the playing was very nice indeed. He came fully expecting to hear four or five good performances, but he had had quite a happy time when he found not only nine but very creditable performances. He complimented the bands on the excellence of their work all round.

He had great difficulty in separating the first and second bands. The general public fully expected that Mastertpn would be placed first.
