BOROUGH COUNCIL.
- ORDINARY MEETING.
The ordinary meeting of tbe Mastertou Borough Gounoil wai beld last evening. The Maj> or presided, and the other members present were—Crs Elliott, Temple, Iloar, Morris, Eton, Ewington, Feist, and McEtven. Tbe Amateur Athletic Association -wrote asking for a rebate oii tbe amount nharged for the use of tt»» Park Oval on Anniversary Day.. Thevletter was .referred to the Park Committee after u division bad been taken.
E. 0. Williams wrote statins! tbat be bad bad tboi usn of the "Borough quarry in River Road for which an application was made at last'meeting to lease tbe same, lie »vas prepared to meet tbe Council on fair terms to retain the quarry. The letter was referred to the Pnrk aud Reserves Committee.
A 1 letter was received, from tbe Wairarapa Employers' Association stating tbat the following bad been .elected tbe Holidays Ccynmittee for the eusuiQg twelve months—President of the Chamber of Commerce (Mr D. Donald), President of tbe Employers' Associatiou (Mr J. M. Coradine), Messrs M. Case!berg, A. Henderson, x R. J. Young, L. J. , Hooper, C. Graham, A. J. Giddings, and a representative of the Borough Oounoil. The letter asked the Council to name tbe Council's nominee. Or Ewintzton was elected to represent, the Council. The A. and P.' Association asked the Council to declare February 21st, the second day of the Masterton Show, a public balf-boliday. Tbe question was referred to the Holidays' Committee. The Wairarapa Distriot Charitable Aid Board notified the result of the conference of looal .bodies for the ap- - portionineut of tbe cost of maintaining infectious diseases hospitals in • the Wairarapa Hospital The question'of making provision for the three hospitals, Mastferton, Pabifltua and ' South Wairarapa, . would considered at a meeting of tbe*Board to be beld op Maroh *2Btb. The Council, after disoussin'g tbe question, decided ,to. protest against: their being adsfsssed to tbe exteijt of 26 per cent. The Engineer wrote thanking the Oounoil for tbe kind and unanimous expression of satisfaction with his servioes as expressed at , tbe last meeting of tbe Council. „ He requested that a written testimonial of 'such satisfaction foir bis servioe and reference be furnished him. On tbe motion of the Mayor, seconded by Or Feist, it was decided to accede to the Engineer's lequest The Mayor and Town- Clerk were authorised to draw up tbe testimonial. ■. • The reDorta of the Library an.d Fire Brigade Committee and the Works Committee were adopted as road. Or Ewingcon ,brought' before tbe meeting tbe action of tbe Trust Lands Trust in refusing to make a grant towards the up-keep of tbe Park. The Trustees bad Dromiaed the Park ' Committee a grant, and ; be felt that it' should be forthcoming, for the Park Committee bad based their estimates on tbe Trußt grant. '' ■ Or Eton spoke against the Trust's action in strong terms, and said tbat they were negleotinc their, duty in not supporting the Park. Oro Morris and Elliott were of the opinion that tbe Trust were- * quite .within their, rights'in taking their own tiire to rmake tbe grant, and they felt tbat the Trust knew tbeir own business better than tbe Council. Tbe Mayor and Or Feist (members of tbe Trust Lands Trust) defended tbe Trust's action in delaying tbe ' grant, which was on .account of tbe shortness of funds, The Trust had an overdraft which they had no legal right to, and it wan only after educational and library matters had re-j oeived assistance ■ from tbe Trust that other matters were entitled , to grants. ' After some disonssion tbequestioq was dropped, and tbe meeting then , adjourned. . - '
