DROWNING FATALITY.
TWO YOUNG MEN LOSE THEIR LIVES. NELSON, January 29. A drowning fatality occurred im the Upper Matakiki River ou Friday evening whereby two young men named Arthur Thornton and Joshua Soholefleld lost their lives. They had followed the funeral of the late Mr William White as tar as O'Rourke'd Hotel. The river was quite low on crossing, but when returning in the evening it was swollen greatly. Buth were attempting to cross the river on one horse, and it is thought that In tne semi-dark-ness they . did not notice the rise. Both were good swimmers. Scholefield's body was found near Mr Fred Lester's place, about ten miles from the scene of the accident, and Thornton's body about three miles from Murchison.
Ihornton and Soholefleld were half-brothers. Both were single men, and aged about 26 and 27 years. *
