I CAPETOWN, January 15. I Two hundred and thirty-five white I employee? of the Nourse Deep Wine, I Johannesburg, have protested that the reports of illtreatment of Chinese circulated in England are baseless. .. . They allege that a photograph of a supposed sufferer was arranged ty a former Chinese compound manager, who was dissatisfied with his salary. , MEETING IN WELLINGTON. , WELLINGTON, Jan. 16. A public meetiug held to-night to discuss the policy of the British Government in regard to Chinese labour in the Transvaal was well attended, and the following resolution was passed:"That whereas the late British Government, at the dicta- , t?on of a small number of capitalists, has seen , lit to introduce Chinese coolie labour into tbeTransi vaal on the pretence that the richest gold mines in the world . would not i pay if free white labour we'-e employed, and whereas suoh a policy is at varianoe with the sentiment «nd traditions of the British raoe, this meeting hereby expresses its hearty eympath'y with the policy of the British Liberal Party as unfolded by its leader, Sir H. Campbell- Bannerman, and trusts that for the sake of the honor and the good name of tbe Empire the polioy will be endorsed by the electors of Great Britain and Ireland." t j
