CHAMPIONSHIP WON BY BARNES. Uy Telegraph—Press Association. AUCKLAND, January 5. The play-off for the chess championship between Mason and Barnes was resumed this morning. Mason made a premature attack and lost a knight, leaving Barnes with a queen, rook, two bishops, and four pawns against a queen, rook, bishop and four pawns. The veteran champion pushed liis advantage in dashing style, and added an Uher win to his record by forcing a mate in three on the 32nd move. Barnes' record is unique in Australasia. He has clayed at 17 congresses, won the championship fhe times, tied for the first place three times, and lost in the play-off twice. He was second three times, third one, and unplaced only four times.
