AUSTRALIAN NEWS.
RAILWAY ACCIDENT. Reoeived January 5, 10.4 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 5. A serious smash occurred ou the railway line at Kirkstall (179 miles west of Melbourne) owing to a truck in a mixed train being derailed. There were only two passengers— Messre Hazard and Panther—who were imprisoned in a carriage a long time. The bottom of the car was cut through to effect their release. Both men were seriously hurt. WASHED OVERBOARD. Received January 6, 1.2 a.m. SYDNEY, January 5. During the passage of the Zelatur from Hokiaugi a big sea crashed aboard and washed a sailraaker named Pearce overboard and he was drowned. ANOTHER MAHENO RECORD. Reoeived January 6, 1.2 a.m. MELBOURNE, January 5. The Maheno, whioh arrived to-day, put uo another record, steaming from Hobart to Melbourne in 26hrs 45mins.
