LATE COMMERCIAL.

WOOL SALES. CHRISTCHURCH, Jau. 54. The third wool sale of this season's series commenoed in the Alexandra Hall to-night, when about 153,000 bales were catalogued. There was a record attendance of English, Continental. American, and local buyers. The wool was not, as a whole, up to the standard of quality of that submitted at the previous sale, some of the olips being heavier in grease, and station clips were mostly from the further back stations and rougher country. There was an improved demand for merino wool, of which a numbei of good clips were ottered, and prices showed a rise of a farthing to a penny per pound according to quality. There were no superfine halfbreds offered such as those which brought top prices at the December I sale, . but medium sorts were in strong demand and advanced a halfpenny per pound. Three-quarter-bred and crossbred showed practically no change in prices., but were more keenly competed for. Pieces of all descriptions wore very firm, and in some cases sold as well as the fleece wool. The buyers for the English market took the bulk of the offering, while a fair quantity was taken by the representatives of the local woollen mills and speculators. The bulk lots in two catalogues were* sold to-night, only a small proportion being passed in, and the sale will be resumed at 9 V a.m. to-morrow. The range of prices was:—Super greasy merino, 12d to medium, to ll%d: inferior 9d to lOd; super half bred, to 13d; medium, 10>£d to 12d; inferior B%d to lOd; super threequarter-bred, to ll^ d '. medium, 9>£d to inferior, B>£d to super crossbred, 10>»d to liy 2 'd; medium, 9%d to 10K<1; inferior, to 9d; long wool, B%dto9)£d; Down wool. 9d to 10% d; scoured merino, pieces, 18dtol9)£d; looks, scoured half bred, 17d to 18d; pieces, locks, 10%' d; greasy first merino pieces, to lid; second pieces 6%d to 9d; first halfbred pieces, 9d to 11 %d; second pieces 6%d to B%d; threequarter-bred pieces, 6d to B}£d; third pieces, 6d j ♦to B>£d; locks, <±%d to 7d. j
