A new horror has been added to public life, says an exchange. At Nelson "last week a l, sooial" was given in honour of Mr Graham, JVI.H.R. The Premier was to have attended, but another engagement intervened, so he sent a phonographic message, which in rotund tones tempered in brass "expressed regret that other engagements had rendered it impossible for him to attend the social, being given in honor of Mr Graham. He was delighted that they were honouring their member, and he would be with them in spirit on the memorable occasion." "Things are not too brisk in the shipping line here," writes a Westport correspondent of the Puuedin Star. "There is very little demand for coal, and the Millerton mine has 'sacked' 130 men during the last two weeks. The Rubi Seddon dredge, which was such a 'frost' to begin with, has been fitted ud with new pumpß, which cost £IOOO, and is now doing splendid work. The Harbour Board expect to have 30ft of water right uo to the wharf at no very dis taut date. This would be a good port if it were not for rod tape, but things are changing for the better as new men get on the Harbour Board."
