CRICKET.

The first round of the Christmas Knock-out Competition of the Upper Hutt Cricket League commenced on Saturday last. The U.S.A. team met Upper Hutt and after an enjoyable game came off victors by five -wickets. Upper Hutt compiled a score of 217, the chief contributors being J. Skerten 52, C. Murray 39, C. Morton 37 and E. Baker 24. With two hours to get the runs, R.S.A. lost two wickets cheaply. Nash, however, started going for the bowling and with the assistance of Andrews and Longhurst, carried the score along quickly, and with ten minutes to spare, passed the Upper Hutt's total. Nash's score of 122 included 23 fours and the rest singles. Andrews made 61 and Longhurst 35 not out. Nash has scored two centuries this season against Upper Hutt. Baker bowled consistently throughout the afternoon. Bowling for U.S.A., Ballinger averaged four for 20. Wesley were engaged with Colts and defeated Mr. Irvine's Eleven. Gibbons top-scored for Wesley with 81 and did the hat trick "when bowling. The three teams now left in the competition are Trentham, Wesley and R.S.A. The semi-final -will be played on Saturday next, bet-ween Trentham and Wesley, the winners of this match to play R.S.A. in the final on Saturday week. Cricket Notes. Ted Baker scored a century against St. Pat.'s Old Boys. His team -was too good for the Old Boys, beating them by over 100 runs. Pat Irvine has lost two valuable players in J. Skerten (transferred to Upper Hutt), and D. Smith, who has left the district. It would be worth considering that all young players be given a season -with the Colts. This team is really a nursery for youths, and Mr. Irvine is the man to coach them. The pitches on the park were like concrete during the week-end and now that a new roller has been procured the pitches should be given more water.
