LADIES' HOCKEY.
The annual match between teams representing Upper Hutt ladies and Te Awa ladies was played on Nelson Park, Napier, on Saturday afternoon under ideal conditions and before a large assemblage of interested spectators. The match was for the Vercoe Cup, held by the Upper Hutt team. Both teams looked fit and well as they took the field, and play from the bully-off "was fast and interesting. Te Awa quickly took up the attack and from a strong forward movement Miss J. Trotter registered the first goal. On resumption the visitors made several determined attacks on Te Awa's circle, but the local defence was sound and repeated attempts ended in failure. The ground was suitable for fast and open play and the local girls were better suited for such conditions -with the result that their forward line dominated most of the play. From a splendid piece of play by Miss H. Edwards, Te Awa's left wing, the second goal was netted. Gn resuming after half-time Te Awa kept up surprisingly fast play and succeeded in slowly wearing down the visitors' defence, with the result that Miss H. Edwards registered two more goals in quick succession. Later, from a wellorganised forward movement, Miss M. Simmonds registered the final goal, leaving the result: Te Awa, 5; Upper Hutt, nil. Although beaten the visitors played an attractive game, but on the day were no match for their wily opponents.
