AMBULANCE DANCE AT UPPER HUTT.

COMBINED WOMEN'S INSTITUTE SPLENDID EFFORT.

The Combined Women's Institutes of Upper Hutt, Wallaceville, Trentham and Silverstream, held a successful dance on Thursday evening- last at the Majestic Theatre. Upper Hutt, for the purpose of raising funds towards the expenses of the Wellington Free Ambulance. The floor was thronged with dancers, many of whom were visitors from outside the district. The orchestra was pleased to give their services and their playing was enjoyed by all present. SergeantMa j or King and Mr. J". C. E. Cottle acted as joint M.C.'s and carried out their duties efficiently. Mr. C. J. B. Norwood, chairman of the Wellington Free Ambulance, was introduced to the assembly by Mrs. Huse. He thanked the ladies for organising the dance and expressed a hope it would be an annual affair. Mr. Norwood said the Women's Institutes had done much towards helping one of the finest efforts-—the Free Ambulance. He was gratified with the interest shown by the Women's Institutes and people of Upper Hutt and district. The committee responsible for the evening comprised the convener, Mrs. Huse (Silverstream), Mesdames Griffen and Williams (Upper Hutt), Mesdames Carr and Allerdyce (Trentham), Mesdames Spackman and Kitchen (Silverstream), Mesdames Hopkirk and White (Wallaceville), who were assisted by Messrs. Carr, Williams, Griffen and others. Among the assembly were Mr. and Mrs. C. J. B. Norwood (Wellington), Mr. and Mrs. Rolfe .Wellington), the Mayor of Upper Hutt (Mr. A. J. McCurdy) , Mr. and Mrs. Collett, Mr. and Mrs. Biggs, Mi*, and Mrs. Major, Mr. and Mrs. Fletcher, Mr. and Mrs. Max, Mr. and Mrs. V. "Williams, Mr. and M!rs. Johnson, Mr. and Mrs. Skinley, Mr. and Mrs. P. Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Harper, Mr. and Mrs. Hercock, Mr. and Mrs. Whiteman, Mr. and Mrs. Cheshire, Sergt.-Major and Mrs. King, Mesdames D. Greig, Oldham, Hirschhorn, McFadzean, Wale, Braid, Judge; Misses Shaw, Cooke, Skerten, GodsifF, Mumby, Collett, Dick, Rolfe, Warrey (Queensland), Drew (Wanganui), Donovon, B. Whiteman, R. Swanson, Edwards, McGhie ; Messrs. C. Ecob, A. Scott, L. Brown, J. McFadzean, K. Cropp, E. Baillie, D. Smith, K. Douglas, R. McKnight, D. Jillett, W. Middlemiss, J. Blewman, P. Keys, Griffen, Stroud, Whiteman and R. Jones. Mrs. Huse announced that £25 had been taken at the door, and had pleasure in handing to the Superintendent of the Ambulance (Mr. Rolfe) the sum of £2O there and

HOME & SCHOOL ASSOCIATION ! The Upper Hutt Home and School i Association held a social evening in ! the schoolroom on Wednesday, 19th inst., to welcome the new headmaster, Mr. W. D. Bennett, and to bid farewell to Mr. M. Pitkowski, who ■ has been transferred to Worser Bay. About 200 parents, ex-pupils ! and present pupils attended. The function was an outstanding success. Messrs. F. Jackson and C. , Stroud acted as M.C.'s, and their ; efforts contributed largely to the enjoyment of the evening-. The ! music was supplied by Mrs. Fahey, Mrs. Edwards, Mrs. Tomlin (piano) , Messrs. A. Whiteman and L. Harris (accordion and drums, etc.). Mr. G. Wale, representing the School Committee, welcomed Mr. and Mrs. Bennett to the district, and also wished Mr. and Mrs. Pitkowski good luck and happiness in their new sphere. Mr. F. Jackson, on behalf of the Home and School j Association, spoke on similar lines. Mr. Bennett and Mr. Pitkowski j suitably replied and were heartily I applauded amid the strains of "They Are Jolly Good Fellows." Novelty confectionery posies were presented to Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. Pitkowski by Olwen Oliff and Ivy Jackson, pupils of the school. Items were rendered by the Male "Voice Choir ("Viking Song" and "Spin Spin") ; elocutionary, Mrs. Harrison and Jean Rimmer; tap and toe dances, Valerie Smith; songs, Messrs. Jackson and Edmonds. The committee, consisting of Mesdames Jackson, Simpson and Fahey and Messrs. L. Walls and C. Stroud, wish to thank musicians and artists for making the evening a success.
