LTpper Hutt Juniors 6, Oriental 7. The Upper Hutt junior team was engaged at Maidstone Park with Oriental on Saturday last, and after a very interesting- game the visitors won by one point. Mr. C. Plummer controlled the game very satisfactorily, and is to be complimented on the way he gave his decisions. Upper Hutt kicked off. An opportunity was missed through over-eagerness by Skh-ton, -who knocked on. Good passing by the backs allowed Benge to make headway and pass to McGrath, who in turn handed to Gibbons, who went over at the corner. Doug-las was unsuccessful with the kick at goal. With a beautiful kick Douglas sent play to the Oriental 25, where McCarthy went over for the second try beneath the posts. Gibbons missed an easy kick. Half-time came with Upper Hutt leadings by 6 points to nil. The second half opened with Upper Hutt backs making- headway, but once again over-eagerness spoilt chances which should have been taken to improve the score. A free kick to Oriental saw Douglas in trouble and the fast backs of the visitors came through and were over the line in quick time, but failed to convert. This reverse nettled the home team, and Benge, the skipper, called for scrums in place of line-outs. A grim struggle took place, the game being hard. Upper Hutt tried very hai-d to cross the line, but Oriental, with a field goal, Avon the game. Upper Hutt played a better game than the winners, but luck was against them. Mistakes were made during- the game by the backs, who did not anticipate their opponents' moves. Among- the best players for the local team were Benge, Skirton, Doug-las, McGrath, Gibbons and McCarthy. Four of these young men were playing fourth grade last season, but nevei-theless they deserve their places. Third 9, Kaiwarra 5. This game was very poor in the first half. Upper Hutt was vex-y lucky to win, their forwards pulling them out of. the fii-e, and only for G. Auckram with his fine save just on time they would have been beaten. The whole team played much below its usual form and will have to train harder if it wants to keep on the winning list. They -were very unlucky in losing W. Tunnell so early in the game as he always plays a good solid game on the wing. He
received a nasty cut near his eye and had to leave the field to have it attended to. Len Max played his usual solid game but was unlucky as he received one or two kicks which slowed him down a bit. The scores were made up as follows: R. Goodman and G. Auckram each scored a try, and C. Morton kicked a penalty goal. Upper Hutt Fourths 14, Technical Old Boys 6. This game was at Quinn's Post on No. 2 ground. The home team played a much improved game, especially the backs, Nash beingoutstanding. A. McCarthy led the forwards and with the help of Bennett, Cattanach, Whiteman and Hunt, kept the opposition very busy. For the winners Nash had three tries to his credit and Pritchaid one, Travel's converting one. Jim "Wyeth, the coach of this grade is certainly doing well, considering it is his first year as coach. Fifth 16, United 0... j This was a most disappointing game j Upper Hutt winning against a weak | team of only 13 men. Our boys ap- | peared to treat the game very casually and the impresion was gained that the laurels won in the previous match would t do the trick in this. There were flashes 1 of individual play but there was little
