CLYDE.
{From our own Correspondent.)
For some time past there has been a dearth of news in this quarter — nothing stirring at all. I may except the several lengthy debates anent the contract for the bridge ; however, after some weeks delay the Corporation accepted Mr. Grant's tender.
We are a remarkably quiet and orderly people, judging from the proceedings of the R.M.s Court ; only an occasional drunk, and petty debt cases have comprised the wholeof thebusinessforsome timepast. His Honor Judge Grey took his seat in the District Court on Monday morning. The only business transacted was of a formal nature, and of no public interest. The harvesting is proceeding rapidly, and from what I can gather the yield of cereals, though not so good as last year, is much better than was anticipated in iiie early part of the season. The clover and oaten hay is exceedingly good, and in many cases will yield two tons to the acre. Mining matters are- "progressing in a satisfactory manner, and all are steadily at work. Up the Wai Keri Keri 1 hear of good ground being opened Tarn told that an old water course has been struck; it is of considerable width, and good payable prospects are obtained. The want of water is the great drawback. The men who are working have to carry the stuff some distance to wash, and express themselves satisfied with results. I often hear complaints of a practice indulged in on the goldfields towns by some of the representatives of what are supposed to be wholesale houses, and which, if true, looks much like trying to kill the goose which lays the golden egg. The mode of procedure is .as follows :—: — A waits on the storekeeper and obtains his wholesale order ; he then proceeds to acour the town, and supply the consumer at the same price, and I am told in some instances at even a lower price. Would it not be better of these men to come up openly as hawkers or hucksters, instead of calling themselves the representatives of merchants ?
