LAWRENCE TOWN COUNCIL,
The ordinary fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence Town Council was held on Monday evening. Present : The Mayor, and Councillors Fraer, Cox, aud Middlemiss.
The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed.
The outward correspondence was then read.
A letter was received from Mr. J. Hill, re the chargg of £2 2s for his lease. Moved by Cr. Fraer, and seconded by Cr. Middlemiss, "That the letter be held over until next Council night." — Carried.
A letter was received from Mr. A. W. re debentures. A letter was received from Mr. F. H. M'Coy, re Mr. Coverlid's lease from the Corporation of a section in Whitehavenstreet, offering to pay half the fine incurred through the lease notbeingstamped in accordance with the Municipal Act, if the Council would complete the lease. Cr. Cox moved, and Cr. Fraer seconded, " That Mr. C<*erlid'3 offer be accepted." — Carried, Cr. Middlemiss moved, and Cr. Cox seconded, " That the Town Clerk advertise that all 99 years leases bo immediately issued, and that the Council pay half the amount of the fine." — Carried. A letter was received from Mr. Squires, re the charge for water on sth and 9th January. Cr. Cox moved, and Cr. Middlemiss seconded, " That the letter and account be allowed to lie on the table." — Carried. An account was received from Messrs, Mears and Whittet for £400, being progress payment for the Town Hall. -* Cr. Fraer moved, and Cr. Middlemiss seconded, " That the account stand over until the next meeting of the Council. — Carried. An account of £10 from D. Cochrane was referred to the Finance Committee. A letter was received from Mr. W. D. Morrison, quoting prices of various additions to water mains. Cr. Cox moved, and Cr. Fraer seconded, " That Mr. Morrison's offer to place a fire plug and branch pipe at the corner of ■ Ross Place and Peel-street, for the sum of £12 10s., be accepted."— Carried. Cr. Cox moved, and Cr. Middlomiss seconded, " That the matter of the fixing of a well at the end of Colonsay-street | be left to the Public "Works Committee, with power to act." — Carried, With reference to Messrs. Meara and Whittet's application for progress pay- | menfc of £400, Cr. Fraer moved, and Cr. Middlemiss seconded, "jThab the account be not received, as they had not complied with the resolution of the Council re insuring the building." The Mayor remarked that, as the account was not accompanied with the architect's certificate, no notice could be taken of it by the Council. He, therefore, ruled the motion out of order. Cr. Fraer moved, and Cr. Cox seconded, "That no more progress payments be paid to the contractors of the Town Hall,, until they comply with the articles of agreement re insurance of the buildine. — (Carried). Cr. Fraer moved, and Or. Cox seconded, ' ' That the moving of the weighbridge office be referred to the Public Works Committee with power to act." (Carried). Cr. Middlemiss, in accordance with notice, moved, and Cr. Cox seconded, "That Whitahaven-street, HarringtonPlace, and Sowerby streets be gravelled throughout, and that the Public Works Committee bring up a report thereon, as to the best mode of doing the work, aud the probable costs, at the next meeting of the Council." — Carried,
