Dtwebin, February 16. John Hoggerty has been committed for trial for attempting to stab Constable Vernon. At Wellington, Jerningham, otherwise Teddy Watefield, figured in the Police Court to-day, and was fined for drunkenness. At Auckland tho death of the Superintendent has caused a prof ound feeling of regret. He arrived in the colony in 1841, and was elected a member of the House of Representatives in 1854 when the Constitution was promulgated. He has been five times elected Superintendent, and at one time was worth £30,000, but sacrificed it in opposing the war policy. He has died poor. At the Geelong Races Calumny, besides winning the Handicap, pulled off the Grand Stand Stakes of 75 soys., beating Polidore, Atlanta, and others. The Northern and Southern Escorts arrived in Dunedin to-day with the following quantities of gold :—: — Lawrence 664> 12 Waipori 238 0 Waitahuna 104 0 Tokomairiro ... ... 151 18 Qnecnstown ... ... 791 0 Cardrona 656 10 Arrow ... ... ... 325 0 Cromwell 1040 0 Clyde ...- ...
