* London, February "L Mr Forest declined the leadership of the Liberals. A meeting of Liberals will be held on Thursday, at which Mr. John Bright will preside. The death is announced of Sir William Sterndale Bennett, the eminent composeir and pianist. February 4. At a meeting of the Liberals held today, the Marquis of Hartington was unanimously elected leader. Arrived. — Countess of ELintore, from New Zealand. February sth. Parliament was opened to-day by Commission, with the usual ceremonies. The ! speech from the throne was read by the Lord Chancellor. Ib stated that the Goj vernment continued to receive assurances of friendship from the several powers, and trusted that the present peace would remain unbroken. The past year has , generally been prosperous, and great proI gress has been made throughout the Colonial Empire. The condition of finances was satisfactory ; although trade returns were somewhat short. Prosperity was genertl, aud had been supported by an excellent harvest. A reduction of general taves is promised.
