AUSTRALIAN NEWS.

Melbourne, February 10th. Another vessel has been wrecked on King's Island. The British barque Ble^ cathra, 900 tons, from Glasgow to Sydney, ran on the rocks during squally weather, on the night of the 3rd. The captain mistook the Island light for the Cape Otw*y light, There were no passengers

aboard. The crew were all saved, and landed here. An inquiry is now being held. The cargo jb valued at £49,900 ; much of an imperishable nature is likely to be saved.

Mr. Tait's Melbourne won the Geelong Gold Cnp after a splendid race with Havicot, Seating him only by a half head; Lurline also ran, but was not placed. Calumny is now in good form, and won the Geelong Handicap with ease, beating the field of six, including Haricot. The absconding Lands Office clerk, O'Ferral, has been brought back, and will be brought before the Police Court to-day on remand.

David Oppenheimer, a merchant, was fined £100 at the Police Court, for importing obscene photographs. The chess match between Fisher of Sydney, and Goldsmith of Melbourne, for the .Championship and £20, resulted in favour of Fisher. The scores were Fisher 5, and Goldsmith 4, and drawn games 3. Dagworth having hit his leg, has been scratched for the Hobart Town Cup. Sydney, February 10. Sir William Manning failed to form a Ministry. Mr. Robertson has formed one, taking the office of Colonial Secreary himself.
