A public meeting was called on Wednesday evening, the 10th instant, by the Chairman of the Tapanui Progress Committee, Mr. John Graham, to hear an account of their proceedings and elect a new Committee. Mr. Graham occupied the chair, and said that afc the request of the inhabitants of Tapanui he had called the meeting to elect a;new Progress Committee, as it was found impossible ■ to get the old Committee to meet. As Chairman, he generally called a meeting himself, and Mr. Allen was the only member who put in -an appearance, and sometimes he was left alone. He informed the meeting that there was no money in the hands of the Committee ; the £50 promised by the Government not having been yet received, although Mr. Menzies had been written to relative to it. He also stated that £10 was due by the public as expenses to the deputation recently sent to Dunedin to wait on his Honor the Superintendent. Having made the above statement, the Chairman left the business in the hands of the meeting. Mr. Price asked if there was no money in the hands of the ftorernmenfc. The Chairman aaid there was — the £50 he had just referred to, but which had not vefc been received. * • The Chairman then read the answer received from Mr. Donald Reid re the petition which was sent to the Superintendent relative to several subjects. The answer was on the whole very fair, and stated that the Pomsihaka bridge road was now in course of erection. With regard to the extended jurisdiction of the Court, the Minister of Justice was the party to apply to. The reserve for the bullock drivers at Swift Creek was now in course of being surveyed, but that on M'lntyre's run could uofc be interfered ■with iuefc now. Mr. M'Lelland then proposed, and Mr. M'Duff seconded, "That the sum of £10 owing to the late deputation be raised by public subscription." After some discussion the proposition was carried. Mr. M'Lelland proposed, and Mr. Neville seconded, " That the report of the retiring Committee be received." — Carried. Mr. A. Allan was then elected Chairman of the meeting. Mr. Mason proposed, " That the Committee consist of nine members, three to form a quorum ; and the term of office not to exceed twelve months." — Carried. Mr. Graham proposed, " That the following gentlemen comprise,the Committee: — Messrs. Andrew Allan (chairman), Noble M f Millan (treasurer), John Graham (secretary), Wm. MTarlane, Alex. M'Doff, Wm. M'Lelland, Jts. Crawford, and T. Crawford." — Carried. The new committee then set to work, arid the following rsolutions were arrived at. " It is to be hoped that the Committee will finish their term as they have commenced. : • Proposed by Mr. M'Duff,. and seconded, •' That the Secretary write to the Government re £50 now in their hands for the use of the township." — Carried. Proposed by Mr. M'Duff, " That a memorial be at once got up, and forwarded to C. C. Bowen, Esq., ■ Minister of Justice, to get the jurisdiction of the court extended to £50. — Carried.' Mr. M'Lelland proposed, and Mr. M'Duff seconded, " That the Government be written to at once re their promise to appoint a Land Officer to visit Tapanui monthly. It was also proposed and seconded that a subscription be got up in the township for improvements, to be subsidised" by Government; also, a discussion took place re the offer of Messrs. Pdynter and M'Farlane, and it was concluded to receive the same. Messrs. Crawford and Allen then kindly consented to become 'canvassers for the subscriptions, j The meeting then closed.
