CLYDE.
{From our own Correspondent.)
That mythical individual the Clerk of the Weather has been playing up with his vagaries, giving us most unseasonable weather, one ((ay — terrifically hot, the thermometer standing near lOOdeg. in the shade j the r.ext, so cold that one requires to put into requisition a top-coat. The result has been that many hare suffered from severe sore throats and bronchial affections.
The annual meeting of subscribers to the Dtuutan Dittrict Hospital was held last Saturday. The annual report was read, which, considering the circumstances, is a very favorable one. A large number of patients have been treated during the year— 7l, nearly one-half, coming from the Cromwell portion of the district, and it was remarked that only some £73 had been subscribed at that place. The retiring President and Vice-President •were re-elected, as also the Committee, with few exceptions. A vote of thanks was accorded to l)r. Thompson, the Resident Surgeon, for the satisfactory manner in which ho had managed the institution since he has had charge of if. The new Committee met shortly after to take into consideration an application from Dr. Thomson for leave of absence for eight months, to enable him to go to the home country for the benefit of his health. This was agreed to, on the understanding that a competont medical, gentleman would take his place for the time. I understand that Dr. Allen, of the ship Auckland, is the gentleman who will take chargofaud that Dr. Thompson goes home in the Auckland. Many will regret the departure of Dr. Thompson, who has been resident in the district some five years, and is highly respected by the public and a large 1 irele of friends, and one and all wish him bon voyage, and will be most pleased to see him return in good hoalth.
Only three, or I may say two, tenders were received by the Corporation for the erection of the bridge. There was a third, but as no cheque accompanied it, it could not be entertained. The two were as follows : — Mr. W. Grant, £5345 ; Mr. M'Cormack, £5980, neither of which is as yet accepted. The Council meet this evening, and I understand a postponement will take place till next week, with a view to a modification of the plan.
