Local Intelligence.

The usual fortnightly meeting of the Lawrence '('own Council w,is held in the Council Chambers on Mond.iy evening. Present : Th" .Mayor, and Councillors Fiaer. MiddW'iniss, Cox and Ferguson. The minutes were read and confirmed, Hicer which the outward correspondence was read. Finer biought,forward his notice of motion ies|>ecting lye laws, but found as Part Xfll of the 18o"7 Municipal Corporation Act had not been adopted l>y the Council, bye la«vs couid not lie framed, he therefore moved that a letter be sent to the Superintendent asking him to proclaim Part XIII of the Act as applicnb'u to the Town of Lawieuce, according to the 3DOh clause of the Act. The motion was seconded and carried The Legislative Committee's report upon back rates was received and adopted. The Public Works Committee's ieport was also adopted. Cr. Ferguson moved, " That one or part of one of the old bridges belonging to the corporation be placed at the disposal of the Wethers tones Progress Committee to place ovei the creek at ftlr. Faheys' house, just outside the town boundary." Cr Ferguson said m.uiy children came to school from Wetherstones, and there were besides a great many foot passengers travelling that road, and often much inconvenience, and even danger was caused by thecieek, He considered the Council would he quite justified in placing one of the bridges at the disposal of the committee. The motion was seconde 1. but the Mayor would not put it, as he held that the Council had no right to expend any money outside the town boundary. To get out of the difficulty, Cr Ferguson altered his motion to sell half of one of the fuot biidgcs .to "the Wetherstones Progress Committee for the sum of ten shillings. Cr ilfiddlemiss seconded the motion, which was canied. On a question being asked hy Cr. Cox as to whether Mr. John Meuzies had been summoned for his back rates, as agreed upon hy tiie Council, it whs explained by the Mayor thit the Town Clerk had been under a misconception of the decision of the Magistrate wiieu the case was heard. The reason the case was lost w.is because the ratu book was not kept according to the Act, and because there was no proof that the sections were in the town. Cr. Cox said this w,,s the second time the Town Cleik had got the Council into trouble, and he thought it was time that this sort of thitig was put a stop to. The statement asked for by Cr. Cox at the previous meeting of the Council as to the cost of the weighbr dge. was laid on the table. After paying all expenses tbe total amount of the bridge aud all its fixings was £169 8s 6.1. It was decided to ask Mr. Arthur to continue looking after the weighbridge until bye laws were framed, when the I Council would be able to compel people ro weigh all their goods on it. The F.nance Cwinmiuee were empowered to wait upon Mr. Chiistophers, and place a part of the money in the bank as a fixed deposits. The Council then adfejourned.

THR half yearly meeting of Court Havelock A.0.F., was held in the Court room, on the 12i.h inst., when the following Bros, were elected to the various offices : C R. Bro. F. Moyle ; S.C.R. Bio. Ehrenherg ; Seciefcary, Bro. Cairns, reelected ; Treasurer. Bro, .M'Taggart ; SW. Bro. M'Lelland ; J. W. Bro. Auld ; S.B.^P.C.R.. Bro. Corry.

A TOAPKKA Mouth correspondent sends us the following :— " A public meeting was held in the Schooihouse. Tuapeka Mouth, on the 11 eh ult.. to elect a Committee for the ensuing year. The meeting refused to accept a verbal resignation, and after some discussion pro and con Mr. Campbell went to his house Hiid brought a written resignation, which was accepted by the Committee. It was proposed by Mr. Browu, seconded by Mr. Blair, and carried tbat the Secretary send to Mr. Hislop Mr. Campbell's resignation. We received the following telegram from Clyde yesterday : -Typhiod fever has reappeared at Ciomwell. Dr. Stirling reports two cases to the Council, and advises precautions to be taken immediately. It is quite time the Clyde Corporation was bestirring itself in sanitary matte™. Mr. Tyree notifies hy*ndvertißempnt that he has opened a \ hoographio gallery at Tapanui, opposite Messrs. M'Greggor and Co.'s store. The grand stand and booths for the Tapanui . Jockey Cuh races were sold yesterday, am) realised the handsome sum of £130. Mr. M. Hay was the auctioneer. A new grand stand has been erected on the Tapunui race course. It will seat three hundred people, and is said to be the prettiest edifice vt the kjnd ia Qwgo,
