NOTES ON THE TUAPEKA RACES. By Spoilsman.

The near approach of the annual races is already causing some little stir amongst the Lawrence sporting men. On Tuesday evenI ing the posting of the weights for the Lawrence Handicap, to be ruu for on the first day, \vns anxiously looked for, as the entries, eleven in number, comprised some of the best horses at preseut in Otago. The handicap appeared to give satisfaction to owners of horses, though Traitor's impost of 9st. 2lb. was considered by a few rather more than his performances justified. Plying Dutchman, who oomoß noiton the list, is well known on the Australian turf, where his memorable struggle with Saladin and several other hard run races, c srned a reputation for gameness and stamina which followed him to New Zealand. Perl robe was also bred in the sister colony ; be is by Panic, and if lie does not belie his breeding should race well. Of Unknown I canont say much. He won a handicap in Palmerston lately, beating a fair field. He will, however, have to meet fast horses on worse terms in this handicap. Tripolis is well known here, and it is needless for me to comment on his past performances. The colt is in good hands, and if he should come to Lawrence he will not disgrace himself. Tadmore, the winner of the Derby in Chrißtchurch is in -with 7st 91b, arid he appears to be much fancied for the race. Sonnambula, who is full sister to Tambourmi, is a fine raking mare, and will no doubt make a name for herself before the season is out. Eight Bower has as yet performed very indifferently. At the Dunedin Spring meeting he only ran third in moderate company; this was no doubt owing to his want of condition. Earl of Lynne has appeared in public several times, but though he came out with a great reputation he has never proved himself capable of racing in good company. Bothwell is, lam informed, a colt of some promise, and « ith seven stone tocarry.if he isable to race he should be among the winning. Kathleen with 6stl2lbis remarkably well in. She has proved herself a game honest mare at all distances up country. Though the company she has had to meet was not first-class, still with 'such a light weight the horse that beats her will not have to let the grass grow under his feet. The entries for the Maiden Plate and the remainder of the handicaps do not close until Wednesday night. Besides the horses engaged in the Lawrence Handicap there are several more coming to the meeting, whilst for the district races good contests may be expected, as there are several horses being prepared for these races. The entries for the Maiden also promise to be numerous. Mr. Nosworthy's team, consisting of Traitor, Tadmor, Sonnambula, and Daniel O'Eourke, i have arrived in charge of R. Eeay. Mr. A. M'Kay is here with Unknown, and Mr. Goodman with Kathleen and Pertobe. Monaghan's, Coombcs', and other horses are | expected here on Monday. Some good work j has been done on the course the last two mornings, although the ground is very hard for galloping. The Club have a man employed .employed repairing the course, but it is of very little avail until such time as the course is vested in the Club no permanent improvements will be effected. In Wednesday's issue, I shall endeavor to provide you with a little information as to the arrival and doings of the horses already here.
