Parliament' having been prorogued, there is politioal quietude, and the last 10 days have been almost entirely devoted to holiday-making as usual. g* Country visitors streamed into townf and town visitors into the country, by thousands during the Christmas and New Year holidays. All the places of amusement have been crammed, and Blondin, who is about to visit New Zealand has performed to 10,600 and 12,000 persona at a time since heaJßclucedhis prices. Governor Bowen left for Europe in the mail steamer on the 31st, and will not return until July or August. Sir Redmond Barry has been sworn in as Acting-Governor until the arrival of Sir William Stawell by the next mail steamer, expected here on the 9th. The Bey. Charles Clark, who leaves for Sydney to-morrow, en route for Auckland, has severed his connection with the Albertstreet Baptist Church, The inter-colonial cricket match resulted in a victory for the Sydney eleven by six wickets. Kelly, for Victoria, made the highest score, 86 ; and Bannerman, for New South Wales, 81. It was an excellent match, and was largely attended. At the New Year's Daywraee meeting, Wollamai won the midsummer Handicap, and Lapidist the Canterbury Stakes. Sullivan, the murderer, still continues in gaol, awaiting deportation to New Zealand. A sea serpent was seen by those on board the Carlisle Castle on her outward voyage, in 45.12W*. - -m- , * Sydney, January 4th. 'Qpo bush-carpenters quarrelled during a drinking bout ; one took a butcher's knife, and, while the other was in bed, ripped him up. The murderer surrendered.
