Melbourne, December 28th. The fire in Beach street Sandridge, totally destroyed the premises of Messrs Barrow, Baker, Head (wine shop), Bay View Hotel, Mrs Eller's boarding house, Jacobson's boot and shoe shop, offices and stablH occnpied by Mr Benny (fish salesman), and the Australasian Hotel is Damaged. Messrs Donaldson, shipchandlers, have a large amount of^property destroyed, but their place of business is saved. t sf December 29th. * A school teacher, near Ararat, has been arrested on a charge of uttering forged cheques. The heat in some parts of the country yesterday was registered at 109deg. ■ A fire at Carlton, this morning, destroyed two dwelling-houses in Drummond street. A man named Lionel Carter has committed suicide by poison in Little Collins street. Chbistchurch, January 9th. Mr. Joseph Beswick addressed the electors of the Kaiapoi district yesterday.
