RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT LAWRENCE.

Before E. H. Carew, Esq., B. M. Monday, 11th Januaby.. Police v. Whitnal. — Charge of obstructing footpath on the morning of the Ist January Mr. Thompson mentioned that there was a good deal of practical joking on the night of the 31st December and the morning of the Ist January. This was one case. An amendment of the information was made, the accused having no objection. Plea, Not Guilty. It appeared that the accused had turned a case over the sidling at Mr. Harris's shop. It did not clearly appear that the place where it lodged was part of the street or footpath. Case dismissed. Police v. Austin and Wm. Hay. — This was a charge of the same class. It appeared that about 30 men and boys had moved a waggon some distance, leaving it near Mr. Sheath's shop. It was not proved to the satisfaction of the Court that the place where it was left was a public way, nor that the accused were the persons to blame for leaving it where it was. His Worship said that it would have been better to have brought some of the men before the Court, rather than these young boys. Case dismissed. Police v. Annie Thompson. — Charge of using obscene language on the Waitahuna road. Constable Hughes proved the offence. The defence by Mr. M'Coy was referred to by his Worship as ingenious, but the case was sufficiently proved. Mr. Thompson gave the prisoner a very bad character, proving several former convictions against her of the same natural. Fined £10 ; in default of immediate payment, three months in the Dunedin gaol with hard labor. M'Coy v. Cowap. — Claim of £3 Bs. for professional services rendered. Judgment ijpr the amount claimed, with 225. costs of Court. Houston v. Laverty. — Claim of £1 for goods supplied. Judgment for the amount claimed and costs of Court, 9s.
