•jj (From a Correspondent?) Christmas and the Ne*w Year have both pwsecl, and with the exception of a few shower*, which have added to the good looks of the crops, we have had splendid weather for pleasure-seekers. Oats and other grain are looking very well, although at one time it wu feared the cropa would be very bad. There was not much in the way of sports as a whole. Mr. Davidson, of the Waikaia Hotel, held races and sports at his grounds on Christmas Day, at which there was a good attendance. A local horse called Curico took the best race, and is fancied for the ensuing races here, which take place on March 4th and sth, notice of which you no doubt will have had. A publican of years' standing here-e-John Utting — was fined one shilling and costs for illegally selling grog on the 28th December ; but it-is understood the matter is not ended. It appears his license was paid to the end of the year, but under the nctr Act the Magistrate ruled he was selling illegally. On the 28th the Oddfellows held a pic-nic at Messrs. Hurly Bros.'s paddock, Winding Creek, which was a success. On New Year's Day Mr, Simton, of Winding Creek, had sports at his place, and dancing at night. The day was rather dull, but the evening made up for it, there being a great gathering of the fair sex to trip the light fantastic toe, Our Mstor, the Bey. B, C. Morrison, is absent flein us " juat now. It is understood the cause of absence is to get the Hymnican or •ilken knot tied, and as it is reported that four clergymen are to officiate at the ceremony, there can be no doubt but that it will .be~*ecurely tied. Cricket, is the main talk here just now. Although there is a club here there has been nrfpraotice, and some of the well-wishers of Bmtzota are rather dubious of the result of the matcli which ii to be played between Hkpantu -and Switzers on the 14th of thw adbth. A return match is to be played at Tapanui on January 27th— the day Pffore the raeee at that place,
