RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT, TAPANUI.
Tuesday, 15th December. (Before J. F. Herbert, Esq., and Captain Mackenzie, J.P.s) David Thompson, John Aitkenhead, and David Circe were charged, on the information of William Mtvyo, with assault and battery, David Thompson was also charged with a separate assault on Mrs.' W. Mayo, and further charged under the Vagrant Act with in-« decent exposure of person. Inspector Thompson conducted the prosecution ; and Mr. A. R. Neville defended the prisoners. The parties having pleaded guilty to the assault cases, Mr. Neville called witnesses to prove the good character of two of the prisoners. In cross-examination, it appeared that the assaults were proved net to be of the character which the current report* fc«d
borne. ' The prosecutor— Mrs. Mayo —got a rery just rebuke from the Bench relative to interfering in the matter. After consultation of the Bench, the prisoner Thompson was fined £2 10s on each charge of assault, he having been previously convicted twice. Circe was fined £2 10s. ; and Aikenhead, on account of excellence of character, was fined £1, without costs. The charge of indecent exposure against Thompson, was dismissed.
