Telegraphic Despatches.
(From our own Correspondent.) Dunedin, Decetnber Bfch. At an adjourned meeting of the Licensing Bench, held to-day, the Bench gave it as their opinion that they had no power to grant night licenses. It was finally agreed by the Bench, and the lawyers for the applicants that one publican should keep open after ten o'clock, and be proceeded against as a test case. In the meantime other applications to stand over. Messrs Williamson, Ure, and Booth, of the Kakprai Woolleir*Mills, have commenced operations. The weather is very unpropitious for the transit of Venus % observations. There has been rain at intervals during the day with a very clouded sky. Queenstown telegrams state that the prospect of observing the transit have much, improved since noon. Telegrams froriJ^ Northern Provinces also state that drizzling has been falling during the day. Dec. 9, 9.47 a.m. The sky is still clouded and overcast, The prospects of the successful observation of the transit at Dunedin are therefore bad. 32 applications from candidates for the English mastership for the High School, were yesterday submitted to the Education Board. Mr. Reynolds addressed a large meeting of his constituents last night. Auckland, December 8. The citizens' ball, in honor of the Governor, was attended by 200 ladies and gentlemen, and was a great success. In replying to the toasfc of his health, the Marquis of Normanby said he would take the first opportunity of travelling through the Colony from end to end.
