SABBATH DESECRATION.

{To the Editor.)

Sib. — I see by your Saturday's issue that " One of the Cricketers " complains of me for venturing to assert that cricketing on Sabbath is iinchristian, and with one (as he thinks) fell swoop — to use his own phraseology —puts a short stop on me, by urging that the most numerous body of Christians — the Roman Catholics, are in favour of such pastimes being carried on during the Lord's day either before or- after church service. Now, Sir, if such were the case I would stand condemned of having said a thing was unchristian which was indulged in by a large majority of Christians : but, with all due deftrence to the knowledge (?) of " One of the Cricketers " I beg to assert that such practices are strictly forbidden ■ by the K.C. Church (Vide. Catechism by the four R.G. Archbishops of Ireland.) e.g. to the question say, the third commandment, the answer is: "Remember that thou keep holy the Sabbath day." Again, " What is commanded by the third con- mandment?" Ans. "To spend the Sunday in prayer and other religious duties.'^— ls cricketing one? — 1 might quote wLat is required and forbidden by the third commandment, but they would be equally condemnatory, in fact, the whole substance of this matter does not differ materially from that contained in the Catechisms of the other Christian denominations. Seeing that "the Protestant Church throughout Germany and Scandinavia follows the same rule " the proof of the one will do to prove the other. He says again : "I believe it is only by a few fragments of the Christian Church in connection with England and Scotland i that men are expected and forced " by their own acts — i.e., the action of their representatives in Parliament, I suppose, — " to grind their bones all the week and put on sack-cloth and ashes on the seventh." Poor fellows ! Are their bones ground from the abrasions of the hard ball, or from the want of oil in their sockets ? The country by whose law 3we are governed is the country to which we must look for advice in this matter, and not take a continental trip to the great, yet demoralized cities of Europe. Ido not, fora moment, wish "One of the Cricketers" to fall back on the Jewish Sabbath, any more than I wish him to abide by the other laws of the Mosaic dispensation ; but if I did, and found that I had never kept a Sabbath in my life, that would be no extenuation of his guilt. Two blacks will never make a white. When the law of the land says, "Any person who shall play at any game or pastime., in any road, street, or public place', sliall, for every such offencQ, be liable to a penalty not exceeding £10." surely the cricketers ought to obey it, as, if they are so numerous here as in Germany, Scandinavia, &c.,_th_ei_Jnjisi_have a most potent voice in the legislationT"7>f — ehccoimtry, and are returning men who differ from them very materially. lam glad that the police have seen it to be their duty to put a stop to this unchristian practice, and now, perhaps, "One" —and all— "of the Cricketers" may enjoy their day of rest reasonably.' — 1 am, &c, S.
