Local Intelligence.
A meeting of the Committee of the Tuapeka Jockey Club was held in the Victoria Hotel on Wednesday evening. Present ; JR. Williams Esq., President, in the chair, and Messrs Fraer, Quln, Hills, Jeffery, Clark, Hay, and Hayes, Secretary. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed. On the motion of Mr. Quin it was resolved that the annual meeting be held on Thursday and Friday the 21st and 22nd January, 187 D. Messrs Fraer, Williams, Sheath, Hills, and Armstrong, were appointed collectors for the ensuing meeting, It was resolved that Mr. Christophers be asked to act as Treasurer during the absence of Mr. W. E. Farrer. Messrs. Hills, Sheath, Hay, Qain, Downes, Clark, and Fraer, were elected stewards for the ensuing meeting. The secretary was instructed to write requesting Mr Kitching to act as Judge, Mr. Sheath was appointed starter, and Mr. Qain, Clark of the Course. Messrs Sheath, Williams, and Hills, were appointed handicappers, and Messrs Williams, Quin, Hills, and Olark, were entrusted with tho management of the course from date. Some discussion ensued relative to the erection of a permanent Grand Stand. The members are fully determined to erect one before the next meeting. The site and dimensions of the building will be decided upon at the next Committee meeting, to be held on Thursday, the 3rd December, when tixa programme will also be »rxa.n«je<J- Subscriptions to a large amount are already promised to the Race Funds, and there is every probability of the meeting being a great success. A meeting of the Grammar School Committee was held in the schoolhouse on Thursday evening. There were present: F. H. M'Coy, Esq., President, in the chair, and the following members of committee, viz, , Messrs Menzies, Squires, Abel, Jamison, Thompson, and Hayes, secretary. It was resolved that the school be reopened on the 30th inst. The medical gentlemen have reported the abatement of the measles. Mr. Thompson moved, and Mr. Jamison seconded, that the school be closed for ten days during the Christmas holidays, and that the annual examination take place at the end of January, 1875. The motion was carried. It wns decided to hold the next Committee meeting on Thursday, sfch January. The meeting then adjtiuvned. The usual monthly meeting of the Hospital Committee was held in the Commercial Hotel last eveuing. Present : Messrs. Fraer (in "the chair) Walker, Armstrong, Squires, Harrop, Arthur, Dr. Stewart, Hay (collector), and Hayes (Secretary). The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. A letter was received fiom tho Town Clerk in refeience to the drainage from the Hospital running into Harringtonstreet, and stating that unless the nuisance was ui>atcd, the Council would take legal proceed* ■ j»ga. The letter was received and. refened to tiie Visiting Committee with power to act. The resident Surgeon's report was laid on the table. There are fourteen patients at present in the Hospital, eight were admitted during the month, and the same number discharged. Mr. "Walker" was elected a member of the Visiting Committee in place of Mr. Bryant, who retires by rotation. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Government, asking them to remit amount of subsidy due at once. The Collector, Mr. Hay, reported that subscriptions were coining in freely. At the suggestion of the Chairman. Mr, Armstrong moved that this Committee recommend at the next meeting of contributors that Dr, Halley be made a Life Governor of the Institution, in recognition cf his past services as HonorarySurgeon. Tne motioQ was carried, unanimously. Mr. Harrop moved that the Visiting Cotntnittg be empowered to get all the necessary forms printed that ere required by the new rules. Carried. The meeting then adjourned, after passing cho usual vote to the chair. Mb. J. C. LOVB. Secretary of the Oddfellows Lodge, has handed to us for perusal a pamphlet received by him from the Hon. W. Gisborne, Commissioner of the New Zealand Government Insurance Department, containing a full explanation of the Industrial Branch of Insurance, to be made available to the various Friendly Societies in New Zealand. The scale of weekly payments is very easy, varying from one penny to three shillings. We should imagine that this method of Insurance will be taken advantage of to a great extent by the members of the various lodges. Mi J. C. Love will furnish tabulated forms, and full information to applicant's free of cost. Monday next, Sfc Andrew's day, will be observed as a general holiday by the banks and most of the business places in Lawrence. Messrs. Ykend and M'Nkil advertise that their coach will in future leave Lawrence at eight o'clock, in place of half-past seven as heretofore. Two mules', were to be seen in the' Victoria Yards on Wednesday. They hava been purchased by Mr. Kitching for the use , of ; the shepherds on. his station. They are well adapted for the high lying lands on that run,as they are both r hardy and sure footed, and though much smaller than ordinary pack horses they can carry more weight for long distances, and should therefore be veiy useful for packing to outlying shepheids' huts, Messrs. Mark, M'Fablane. and party are still sluicing cement at Waitahuna with good lesults. They do not intend washing up till Christmas. They will then widen the race so as to allow them to 1 use the water in the day lime, all their work as yet having been done at night. Mr. J. A. Miller has been appointed working • manager of the Sons of Fortune Gold ( Mining Co. at the Arrow, at a salary of £5 per week.J . ,A Tapandi correspondent writes :— There is little or no excitement in this place, unless on coach days — a novelty here.
