The New Zealand Steam Co.'s offer for Inter- Provincial mail service in con nection with the Frisco service has been declined by the Government, who will arrange from month to month. The " Times " of tliia morning announces that Mr. Bowen, Resident Magistrate of Chriatchnrch, has been appointed Minister of Justice, and denounces this latest addition to tho Ministry in no measured terms. Auckland, November 17th. Two fresh cases of scarlet fever havebroken out among the Hydaapes passengers at Quarantine. ■ The cabin passengers are complaining greatly at not being separated from the Government immigrants. Dunedin, Nov. 18, 9.25 a.m. Criminal proceedings were taken yesterday against M'llroy, of Christchurch, for obtaininjjmoney uuder false pretences in connection with the Comet case. M'llroy was brought to Dunedin in custody by tho Maori yesterday. The case was adjourned at seven o'clock -last night till to-day. Mr. Hawthorne, rector of the High School, is dangerously ill, and but slight hopes entertained of his recovery. He is suffering from inflammation of the lungs and fever. The Northern Escort arrived in Dunedin on Tuesday evening last with the following quantities of gold :—: —
