Monday, 26th Ooxobeb. (Before E. H. Carew, Esq., R.M., and A. Stewart Esq., J.P.) Police v. Cranley. — The defendant was complained of by Sergeant Farrell, for suffering fermented licjuor to be drunk in his licensed house, the Golden Age Hotel, Wetherstones, on Sunday, the 11th October last. Inspector Thompson conducted the cose on behalf of the police. pleaded guilty; ho afterwards explained that the suffering fermented liquors to be drunk on the Sunday was acknowledged, bui that tho drinkers were bana-Jide travellers. He was then allowed to withdraw his plea, and then pleaded not .guilty. The furnishing Percy Geeves and David Parsons with pints of ale which they drank on the premises on the Sunday mentioned was proved. The drinks were supplied by Mrs. Cranley in the absence of her husband. Geeves and Parsons had been looking for horses near Bungtown, and on returning after travelling about four mileS) G-eeve3 went into his own Stable, which was near the hotel, and after altering his dress 1 went and got this pint of beer in respect of which tho information was laid. The whole 1 case turned on whether Geeves was a traveller or not. The bench were of opinion that as he returned to his own premises after his journey before he went to the hotel for the beer that ho was not a traveller. This was tho first case of the kind, and a small penalty would be sufficient; fined 10s, and costs of Court 58 6d. An application was made for a temporary transfer until next Licensing Court day of the license of James Bae, of the Junction Hotel, to James Craig. The police had no objection. Mr. M'Coy appeared in support of the application, which was granted. Police v. William Madden. — This was an adjourned cose of stealing a shirt from the store of Mr. Cox afc Waipori. Mrs. Godwin gave evidence that she was the only person in charge of the store, in the absence of her husband. The prisoner was in the store several times ; she did not sell the shirt to Tiim, give it to Him, or authorise him or anybody else to take i*,. ske recognized the shirt as one that had been in the store for sale. His Worship said that he would take into consideration the fact that the prisoner had been under remand for fourteen days, j He was not known to the police. Sentenced ' to one month's imprisonment with hard labour in Lawrence Gaol. Inspector Thompson prosecuted. Micliael v. Sfieath. — This was a claim for £7 10s for damages arising out of frequent trespasses by the sheep of defendant in James Michael's crop. Mr. M'Coy for the plaintiff. The trespasses were admitted, but the estimate of damage was disputed. After the usual amount of conflicting evidence common to this clas* of cases had been given, his Worship gave judgment for £3, costs of Court £1 13s, witnesses expenses 15s, but did not allow professional costs. M'Carthy v. KitcMng.— adjourned for four weeks.
