The sections above referred to not being in tho Tuapeka Hundred, I humbly submit that your letter ia not a reply to my query. " On the llfch ultimo you sent the following letter to the Mayor of Lawrence, tho contents j of which gave great satisfaction to the resij dents of the Tuapeka district : —

" 'Provincial Secretary's Office, " ' iHvnerfin, 11th Sept., IS74<. " 'Matthew Ilay, Esq., Mayor, Chairman public meeting, Lawrence. " ' Sir,— l have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your letter of the 3rd instant, enclosing resolutions passed at a public meoting at Lawrence on the 31st ultimo, respecting the manner in which the lands in the Tuapeka Hundred should bs opened for occupation. " 'After careful consideration of the re3oltions adopted by the meeting, and the various reasons so ably urged by you in the letter enclosing the resolutions, the Government arc fully convinced that it would be desirable to open a suitable area ©f the hundred under the Agricultural Lease Regubtion3. As soon, therefore, as the survey o£ the hundred has been made, Axie cave will bo raken to cause a s\i(Ticicnt area to be opened under the Agricultural Lease Regulations to meet the requirements and views of the petitioners. — I have the honor to be, &c, " ' D. " I need not say that on the strength of the above communication many intending settlers have been looking forward for some official intimation of the blocks and sections to he thrown open under the Agricultural Lease Regulations on the land surveyed and gazetted as the Tnapeka Hundred, to be thrown open on the 20th inst. "Should the Government not carry out theii intention as conveyed in the letter referred to, their action will cause /|jl:cat disappointment and dissatisfaction ajfbngst a large number of the well-wishers efov thetPr^ sperity of the Tuapeka district. " I have the honor to be, &c., " A. Ferguson." <{ Provincial Secretary's Office, "Dunedin, 15fch October 1874. " 3ir, — 1 have the honour to acknowlede the receipt of your letter of the 13th instant, in reply to my letter of the 9th, in which you state that my reply to your letter was not an answer to the question you asked. I regret to find that the reply I forwarded is not satisfactory to you. I may state in exj planation, -however, Jjhat I was not in a po- ! sition to say what portion of the Tuapeka Hundred the Government proposed to set apart for agricultural leasing, as the plans had not been received from the Survey Department, and being aware that the lands which have since been advertised would be the first to be opened on agricultural lease I concluded that the information I forwarded was what you wanted. I have to apologise for the mistake. ' ' Lithograph plans of the Tuapeka Hundred are not yet ready, and. the opening has therefore been postponed to the 10th proximo. As soon as the plans are ready (which will be within a few days) the sections to be opened on agricultural lease will be duly advertised for the information of all interested, '• I am glad to find that my letter in the Mayor of Lawrence ' gave great satisfaction to the residents of the f uap^.ka district," and I have to assure you that the intention of the Government as conveyed in that letter will be carried into effect, and that the prosperity of the Tu.ipeka district will always ! receive tlie attention of the Government.
