NEW ROAD FROM THE BEAUMONT.

(To the Editor.) - Six, — A report m jour paper of the meeting which was held this week at the Beaumont, to oppose the granting of Mr. Lancaster's application for permission to make a road, contains same statements with regard to my- " self and .partners, and replies to which I will (4»( 4» .obliged by your inserting in your next issue. first resolution states, "That Messrs. Lancaster and. Co. desire to obtain the monopoly of a road alongside the east bank of the Clutha.' 1 This is manifestly untrue, as we propose to make the road and throw it open .to the public free for ever. lam personally ' charged with obtaining signatures to the : memorial by misrepresentation. I simply pronounce this as untrue, and defy any of our opponents to prove their statements. When >, Mr. Cummings was asked at the meeting to put his resolution in writing, he offered to do so, but the Chairman would not take it. I write .this in explanation, as the one-sided . report of your correspondent would tend to 'mislead the object of our memorial, which in honest truth only contemplates providing a good .and shorter road to the Teviot and other up-country districts than at present is in r existence; whilst we in return expect of course to get a share of the road traffic for the punt, which, has for bo many yeari past been of immense benefit to the public while at work afc the Beaumont. We will also be doing a public benefit by lessening the price of firewood and fencing material, by means of making an easy approach to a good bush. I can quite understand the opposition of Messrs. Bennett, Rae, and others, who hare places along the line of road, from which ' traffic, would be partly diverted if our road be opened ; but these gentlemen should take a more public spirited view of matter*, and ' recollect that when the Beaumont bridge was flrtt proposed we, at proprietors of the punt, ' -did not oppose its erection, well knowing it • would be of some public benefit. — I am, Ac., D. Beaton, ■ -' ■ ' "Wot Lancaster and Party.
