Melbourne, August 31st, A man named Shanahan has been arrested on suspicion in connection with the Mornington murder. All coast sailing vessels report having experienced severe weather. The agricultural implement makers have struck for an advance of wages. Tasmanian hops have been sold at 2s 3d. September Ist. Several meetings have been held, and resolutions passed, in opposition to the new tariff. The debate is now proceeding in the Assembly. Much exception has been taken to the proposed mineral expenditure. The Jeddah (steamer) has been floated. September 2nd. Mr. Samuel Wilson, of tho Wimmera, has offered £1000 to the Acclimatisation Society towards an effort for the introduction of salmon into Victoria. A shock of earthquake was felt in the suburbs on Sunday evening. Several of the trades are dissatisfied with the new tariff. Hops are selling readily at Is 4d. A telegram received from Mauritius intimates k that sugar is being manufactured
slowly. There has been a large falling off in the yield. Sydney, September Ist. I The Intercolonial Conference of stock inspectors has been postponedj pending replies from Victoria and Tasmania. Tasraanian hops, Is 4d. September 2nd. A railway accident occurred on the Southern line. Two trains came into collision, causing injuries to several persons. Adelaide, September 2nd. A message was sent from this to Bombay, and a reply received here within eight minutes of the time of sending the message. Launceston, September Ist. Captain Long of the Low Heads, dropped down dead to-day in a boat when proceeding to the .steamer Derwent. Dr. Murphy, brother of tha Mayor of Launceston, has arrived by the Derwent to take charge of the Hospital here.
